Before having kids, I LOVED makeup. I loved getting ready in the morning. I loved trying new makeup techniques. I would watch youtube makeup tutorials before bed. I loved looking fancy with nowhere to go. I think I’ve made my point. I never thought I would stop using makeup; I was a makeup everyday type of girl. However, after my first baby, my priorities shifted. I felt like I didn’t have time to get ready in the morning because I had so much to do to take care of my little love. I often rolled out of bed feeling tired and looking tired, but I was ok with it because I had my baby to take care of.
Fast forward to postpartum with baby number 2. I decided to be intentional with my time. I had 2 babies to take care of and they need the very best version of their mom. I decided to carve out some time for myself. I tried to wake up 5-10 minutes before my daughter’s first morning feed, tipped toed to the bathroom, and started my 5 minute makeup routine. Never in my life did I think I could put on makeup that fast, but I surprised myself. This simple makeup routine will give you that natural and clean look. Makeup routines change with seasons of life. I have since changed my routine up, but this is for parents that have been up all night doing night feeds and only have minutes to spare for themselves.
Step 1: Tinted Moisturizer
The first thing I apply is tinted moisturizer with a moist Beauty Blender. I like trying different makeup brushes like the next girl, but my makeup tool of choice when I’m in a pinch is the Beauty Blender sponge. In my opinion, it is the ultimate multitasker. It blends my face makeup effortlessly, and I’m able to use the same sponge for my tinted moisturizer, concealer, and liquid or cream blush. It might be the reason why this routine is so fast.
My favorite tinted moisturizer as of lately is the Rare Beauty Positive Light Tinted Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 20 Sunscreen. I liked it because my skin during my early postpartum days was screaming for hydration and this tinted moisturizer made my face look glowy, without looking sweaty. I also felt and still feel like a tinted moisturizer is more forgiving when you don’t have all the time in the world to blend it out to perfection. It gives light and natural coverage so that your skin tone looks even without looking overdone.
Step 2: Concealer
I’ve always thought that concealer was the most unnatural part of my fast makeup look, but I am all for it! I’ve never had under eye circles so deep until after having children, and especially in the first couple months of having a newborn. The one thing that I wanted to do was cover those under eye bags up. A new concealer that I loved at that time was the Huda Beauty #FauxFilter Matte Buildable Coverage Waterproof Concealer. It felt lightweight, blended out quick and easy with my beauty blender and it had minimal creasing when I didn’t have a lot of time to spend setting it with a ton of powder.
Step 3: Liquid Blush
Next, I apply a little dab of liquid blush down my cheek bones to my apples, and you probably guessed it, I blend it out really quickly with my beauty blender. My favorite liquid blush is the Rare Beauty Soft Pinch Liquid Blush because a little dot goes a long way. It also stays put and lasts all day! It’s color pay off is not subtle, but it blends in so easily that the bold color still appears soft on your cheeks. This blush is perfect for any moms that want quick application without needing touch ups throughout the day!
Step 4: Mascara
If I only had time to use 1 makeup product, I would pick mascara. Swiping on mascara really opens up your eyes and makes the biggest difference in your look. During this time of sleep deprivation, I would recommend finding a mascara that doesn't smudge. The last thing you want to do is paint racoon eyes over your eye bags. For this reason, I started using a tubing mascara. I’ve been using Caliray Come Hell or High Water Volumizing Tubing Mascara. When I use this mascara, it lengthens my lashes giving the illusion that I’m wide awake, and it lasts all day without reapplying.
Optional Step 5: Finishing Powder
I love looking glowy at all times of the day, for any occasion, and I do this with the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder. I can get sloppy with it and no matter how fast and imprecisely I dust this all over my face, it still gives me the perfect soft glow without looking too disco ball highlighted. This was definitely an extra step that I just couldn’t let go.
Optional Step 6: Fill in Eye Brows
When I have no time left, I usually don’t even bother with my eyebrows. However, I know eyebrows can make a huge difference in someone’s look. If eyebrows give you confidence, then I say just do it! I normally use Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz, but when you don’t have the time, I find blending out an eyebrow powder is easier to do quickly while still looking very natural. Anastasia Beverly Hills Ombre Effect Long Wearing Brow Powder Duo is an easy powder to apply with a brow brush.
Step 7: Setting Spray
This step is a crucial one. I used to be a setting powder kind of girl, but after having kids, my skin became so dry. I ended up switching to a setting spray because I wanted my makeup to last all day, with no touch ups. The Urban Decay All Nighter Waterproof Makeup Setting Spray still works wonders on me. I just close my eyes and spritz it on over my makeup, let it dry and that’s it! My makeup stays put all day so I don’t have to waste any of my precious time on touch ups.
With practice, this makeup routine became my go to when I was in a pinch! I still do this no makeup makeup look fairly often and it reminds me of my early postpartum time. This was the makeup routine that worked for me, but feel free to mix and match. Use your favorite products or skip steps. Do what makes you feel confident. It doesn’t seem like much, but this little bit of makeup did so much for me. It was my tiny bit of self-care in the morning, it gave me confidence throughout the day, and I just felt good about myself. A little bit of makeup can be a powerful thing for a busy mama!
