Getting up in the morning is one of the hardest parts of the day. One thing that helps wake me up, more than coffee, is just washing my face. There’s something about splashing water on your face that makes anyone go from 0 to 100 percent awake really fast. Having a morning skin care routine really jump-starts my day and provides me with a consistent time of peace, so that I can have a few minutes of self-care before the day starts. After having kids, my skin got so dry. It may have been the breastfeeding, or hormone changes postpartum, but my skin desperately needed a drink of water. I am not by any means a doctor, but I am going to walk through my skin care regimen for the past year that has been more geared towards moisturizing dry skin and reducing the look of dark spots. I know that everyone is different and may have different skin care needs, so if you have more skin sensitivities, you could see a dermatologist for recommendations that are more catered to you. However, if you are looking for a basic skincare regimen that is easy, affordable, and will help your dry skin feel comfortable, then keep reading!

Step 1: Face Wash

My favorite face wash is the Cerave Hydrating Facial Cleanser. This stuff feels like I’m washing my face with lotion, so you can imagine how hydrating that must feel. With my dry skin, this face wash just feels so nice, especially in the winter months. Another plus is that I am yet to see this face wash break my skin out. After washing my face, my skin feels clean without the tight feeling, but I do not feel greasy, nor do I get greasier throughout the day. Doesn’t this face wash sound like magic? It contains hyaluronic acid, ceramides and glycerin for hydration. It is also fragrance free for my sensitive skin. I thought it would be a temporary purchase for the winter, but I can’t go without it now!

Step 2: Vitamin C

Vitamin C has so many benefits, how could I not add it to my morning routine? If you do a quick google or YouTube search on Vitamin C serums, you’ll find vitamin C serums are hydrating, brightening, and they can reduce hyperpigmentation. Honestly, the list goes on! During and after pregnancy, I developed a little bit of hyperpigmentation on my face, so I knew I wanted to start using vitamin C to help reduce the appearance of some of my new dark spots. Currently, I use The Ordinary Vitamin C Suspension 23% + Spheres 2%. There are so many vitamin C serums on the market, it is hard to choose which one to try. I initially tried this brand because of its price point, but I noticed it did not irritate my skin, so I continued to use it until now. It does feel a bit gritty when you first apply it, but the grittiness does not stay on the face a few minutes after application and I prefer the slight grittiness over feeling sticky, which I have felt with some vitamin C serums I’ve tried in the past.

Step 3: Eye Cream

The postpartum era of my life left me with some serious under eye bags. It wasn’t until this point in my life that I felt that eye cream was a necessity in my skin care. In the morning, I use the Cerave Under Eye Cream Repair Cream. I’ve tried numerous eye creams and unfortunately some tend to make me develop milia around my eyes because of how thick the formulas can be. However, this one does not seem to clog my pores at all and it is unscented for my sensitive skin. Seasonally, I tend to get mild eczema around my eyes, so applying this Cerave eye cream has been light and moisturizing for that sensitive area on my face. I’ve tried other daytime eye cream products, but nothing worked better for reducing the look of my eye bags than just plumping that target area with moisture.

Step 4: Hyaluronic Acid

Can a girl with dry skin like me have too much hyaluronic acid? As you can see, most of my skin care products already have this ingredient, but I want that kind of moisture to be all over my face! I use The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 Hydrating Serum. For how much I go through hyaluronic acid, you can’t beat the price point of The Ordinary brand. One drop is enough product to cover my whole face, so the bottle will last for a long time. It does feel a bit wet and tacky, but once you layer your moisturizer on top, it is not noticeable. What you’re left with is a surge of moisture for your face.

Step 5: Moisturizer

My final step is applying moisturizer. I like to seal in all the products I use with a good daily moisturizer. I use the Cerave AM Facial Moisturizing Lotion with SPF 30 because it feels nice and thick, not to mention it is a 2 in 1, so I’m still protecting my skin from the sun without needing an extra step. If the thick texture of this product bothers you, I like to warm it up by rubbing it in my hands first before applying to the face and neck.

Having a quick and easy morning skin care routine can really do wonders for a person’s well-being and overall confidence. Keeping the routine down to these 5 products can make this routine easy to remember, less time consuming, and make you more able to complete the entire routine consistently. When done consistently, you'll likely see the skin results you’re seeking to achieve!
