A full day of playing with the kids, cooking, and cleaning, can really make a parent feel wound up. In my current season of life with 2 toddlers, I really don’t have a lot of time for myself during the day to decompress. My favorite way to unwind from the stresses of everyday life is to get “unready.” Unlike my daytime skincare routine, I use this routine to slow down. This routine is a bit longer and there is zero pressure to go through these steps quickly. I love taking my time with this routine because I feel like I am taking care of myself. I am adding back moisture and renewing my aging skin. I should mention, I am not a doctor, so if you have skin with specific skin care needs, you can see a dermatologist. However, if you are looking for an easy skincare routine for dry skin and to reduce the look of fine lines, then you can give this routine a try.
Step 1: Double Cleanse
This should go without saying, but always remove makeup before bed! You don’t want to clog pores and stain your pillow while you’re sleeping. I use Farmacy Green Clean Makeup Removing Cleansing Balm. If you haven’t tried this makeup remover, you should run to Sephora and get it! It gently removes every trace of mascara and on no make up days, it can lift thick SPF off of your face with no effort. It cleans everything off your face without any harsh rubbing on your skin so you won’t have raccoon eyes after washing your face. The best part is I can really get in there and gently massage away mascara without leaving an oily residue or cause a sty. Most of the time, my face feels clear of makeup in one wash.
Step 2: Face Wash
My favorite face cleanser is the Cerave Hydrating Facial Cleanser for Normal to Dry Skin. I can’t give enough praise to this product. I mentioned this cleanser in my “Morning Skincare Routine for Busy Moms” blog. This is, dare I say, my favorite facial cleanser EVER. It feels like washing your face with a lightweight lotion. The hydration that is felt is instant, but it doesn’t make me feel oily, has never broken out my skin, and it still leaves my skin feeling clean without that tight feeling.
Step 3: Warm Washcloth Over Eyes
Over the years, just like my skin, my eyes have gotten dry. I’ve struggled with dry eyes and the occasional sty. To help prevent this, I was told to spend a little time laying a warm washcloth over my eyes, then lightly massage around the tear duct area. I love feeling the warmth over my eyes, and I feel that it helps to really cleanse my eyelashes as well. I am the type to wear mascara everyday, so this really helps gently cleanse this sensitive area and prevent clogged pores on the lash line.
Step 4: Retinol
I use the Sunday Riley Luna Sleeping Night Oil. When it comes to anti-aging products, retinol has alway been the product that I’ve seen the most results over time. This is something that I held off on while pregnant and breastfeeding, but once my daughter weaned herself off nursing, I was ready to add this back into my night routine as soon as possible! This formula absorbs well into my skin, feels hydrating and it really makes a difference in reducing the appearance of fine lines and pores on my face. I usually see a difference in the overall texture of my skin when I use retinol.
Step 5: Eye Cream
After months of sleepless nights, I definitely needed some eye cream. Just like the Luna Sleeping Night Oil, I waited until after breastfeeding to start an eye cream with retinol. I’ve been using the Glow Recipe Avocado Melt Retinol Eye Cream. It feels thick right out of the jar and feels so moisturizing on the skin. The application feels smooth as it absorbs quickly into my skin while applying it and it hasn’t caused me to break out in milia. I like to use my retinol products at night because it can make my skin sensitive to the sun, so I let retinol do all the skin repairing when I sleep.
Step 6: Moisturize
After applying all the serums, I lock it all in with a facial moisturizer. At night, I like to use the Cerave PM Facial Moisturizing Lotion. This moisturizer feels thinner than the AM version of this moisturizer because it does not have SPF. Though the formula feels thin, it still has such good ingredients in it that help to increase hydration while still feeling incredibly lightweight.
Optional Step 7: Pimple Patches
With all the stress of motherhood, sometimes I’m caught off guard by an unexpected pimple. That is why I like to have pimple patches available at all times. The ones that I use are from the COSRX brand and I feel like they’ve been effective as far as decreasing the amount of time my occasional blemishes last. I just stick a patch right over the blemish and I swear it looks smaller and less irritated in the morning. If anything, it keeps me from hyper focusing on the pimple and prevents me from picking at it.
My night skincare routine is my time to unwind and really feel like I’m taking care of myself. Self-care as a mom is so important and oftentimes can go by the wayside due to shifting priorities and an endless task list. But, adding a night time skin routine is enough to make you feel replenished and easy to fit into any mom’s busy schedule. So take a few minutes to treat yourself! You all deserve it.
